How do I get rid of a hum when my dvd and tv are connected?

I tried different tvs and dvd players, and the hum always returns once the video connection is made between the tv and dvd player. I don’t understand why any connector (hdmi, component, s-video) from my cable box to tv would improve the connection over coax. The cable line (from the outside) that goes into the cable box is coax. Why would it improve if the cable goes through the coax and then one of the above connections??? Isn’t the quality already diminished due to the coax cable from the outside??? I’m a bit confused…thanks!
PS: I have a 50″ Sony WEGA (720p) projector
