Is it possible to use my tv as a computer monitor and also have very good graphics? How?

I have Sharp Aquos TV which has very few input options. I bought a VGA SVGA DB15 Male to RGB TV Out RCA Adapter Cable to connect my laptop to it (to display the computer screen on the TV). Once connected, at best I get flickering, mostly pink static on the TV but mostly not even that.
