How do I hook up my surround sound receiver to my TV using the TV as audio, not the surround sound speake?

If this DVD player of yours has a set of red/white stereo audio outputs, simply connect those to your TV along with the video cable.
If your DVD player doesn’t have audio outputs, then you’ll have to get a new DVD player.
This lack of flexibility is why I hate those “home theater in a box” kits so much. They may be cheap, but they often just come with a DVD player that has a surround sound decoder inside of it, and no additional inputs or outputs that a real surround receiver would have. [who]
You simply connect it with any cable that carries audio.
1. AV Cable (red, white and yellow)
2. Component (red, blue, green and, red and white)
3. HDMI Cable (if available)
You then will have sound from the DVD player. [who]
