How does the media/TV get away with being so offensive to lesbians?
Almost every time a lesbian is mentioned on TV it’s followed by some perverted comment. All men do is treat us like sex objects. I don’t understand why this is still going on. Honestly I think I’d prefer men to hate us rather than perve over us.
It’s bad enough living in a straight world but why must everyone be so blatantly offensive towards us?
I never said I hated a whole gender! Just that the majority of men’s reactions on TV is sexist towards lesbians. It’s precisely this discrimination which I’m against and I don’t understand why there’s so much of it on TV.

I can’t stand lesbians like you.
You give us a bad name. I’m not interested in being friends or socializing with other lesbians who hate an entire gender that is made up of billions of humans. People like you make me sick. [who]
Like what? [who]
Well im a guy and i dont fanticize over watching lesbians…well granted im gay, but i dont get why guys get off to it in the first place. [who]
Society is straight male dominated, many straight males like to leer at lesbians so that’s the view we tend to see in the media. I hate it too, and I particularly hate programs such as The L Word because as far as I’m concerned it’s just using lesbians for excitement and titillation and it’s wrong because we shouldn’t be seen purely for our entertainment value. But that won’t change while straight men dominate society, so it’ll never change because they will always be in control.
For the record I don’t hate men, I just hate the way too many of them view lesbians. [who]
I know what you mean and I hate it too! Even gay men are totally accepted on TV now and are represented properly and in a good light. The only ‘lesbian’ storylines I tend to see on the regular programs I watch are straight girls having a drunken fling and then going back to men.
Sadly, I suppose it IS because of what society generally wants to see
And I guess that has a lot to do with stereotyping as well. The stereotypical gay man is fashionable and good looking, whereas, (to our fairly ignorant societies) a stereotypical lesbian is unattractive and manly.
Person above me… you say that about The L Word, but it’s created by lesbians and the cast includes quite a few lesbians so I’m pretty they’re not using that aspect of the show to attract men to watch. Most guys probably just enjoy the sex scenes, whereas most gay women who watch it enjoy the whole thing (including the sex scenes
) and get involved with the characters etc etc. Also, the most recently aired episode of season 6, for example, didn’t have ANY sex scenes and probably not even any scenes straight men would find particularly enjoyable to watch… [who]
I know what you mean. I am a straight woman and it irritates me when men drool over “lesbians” and make perverted remarks. They think that all lesbians are like the ones they see in porn- they don’t seem to realise that these women are paid to do stuff with other women! As a result, they think that all lesbians are dying to be “sorted out” by a “real man” and they think that lesbians are women who just haven’t met the right man yet!!!!!!! So stupid. Also, this negatively affects straight women- there are so many men out there who think that all women secretly have lesbian tendencies, and that we are all dying to have a threesome with him and our best friend! WTF!!!!!!!! [who]
