Is it necessary to turn off TV and small appliances during a lightening storm?
Cindy asked:
I am sitting here on the computer during a thunderstorm with lightening and wondering how safe it is. The TV has “clicked” several times already. Should I shut it off and log off the computer?

Yes you should. A lightning strike close by would destroy any electrical device. [who]
I strongly suggest you get off the computer during a thunderstorm. Should a lightning bolt hit your house or building, the electricity will flow through the wiring and potentially electrocute you. This does not happen often, however your life is not worth the risk. People have been killed even while indoors because they were using electronics and the electrical discharge from the bolt came out from the sockets.

Sometimes I notice the tv turn off even when there is no storm….it comes with what seems like a pulse going through the house…you can even feel it in your chest.

Yea this is why they recomend surge protectors. One of my friends had his tv melted when their house got struck by lightening. The electicity is looking for the simpelest way to the ground and any electrical stuff that is pluged in can get zaped on its way to the ground. [who]
