Is watching something on tv a legitimate reason to be late for work?

Someone at my work has called in about 5 times now to say that he will be running late because he wanted to catch something on tv.

Unless he is looking for himself, his children or some other once in a lifetime momentous occasion on TV, I’d cut him loose. His priorities do not have the company ranked high enough. [who]
That’s what DVR is for… or even a tape recorder, most jobs would fired them or at least write them up.. kudos for him telling the truth though. [who]

You may want to speak with that individual about getting a VCR or if they have cable to get a DVR to record the show. In the past, it may have been difficult to catch something on TV, but in this day and age, it is WAY too easy to record it, or see it later on YouTube. Gently let them know that you understand that they don’t want to miss a particular show, but they have called in several times with the same reason for being late, and that they have many options for recording something (even if it’s just the last few minutes of a show). Let them know that they can indeed have their cake and eat it too.
