How do I set up my tv so my wii screen fits the whole screen?

I have a 40″ lcd hdtv. When I hook up my wii to it, it doesn’t fill up the whole screen, only about 3/4 of it, with 2 vertical black stripes at each end of the screen. I’ve tried the wii widescreen settings to no avail, and i’ve played around with my tv settings as well but no luck.
