How do I get my tv to get a signal when the dvd player is connected?

I have a Bravia tv and I just connected my dvd player to it however when I go to the menu to select the ‘dvd’ option it says ‘no signal’. I cannot figure out what the heck I am doing wrong and the instruction booklet is useless. I’m at my wits end, everything is plugged in, but no signal. Help!
